Reproductive Endocrinology includes disorders related to reproduction and fertility that are unique to females. These include disorders related to fertility, pregnancy, menopause, menstrual cycles etc.
The endocrine disorders include hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (Sheehan syndrome), hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism(turner syndrome) hyperprolactinemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome include Gestational Diabetes, Gestational thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism in pregnancy, graves disease in pregnancy, recurrent abortions, menopause, menopausal osteoporosis, hirsutism, premature menopause, premature ovarian failure, virilising ovarian tumors, lymphocytic hypophysitis etc.
The most common disorders seen by Endocrinologist are gestational diabetes, thyroid disorders during pregnancy and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Gestational diabetes refers to onset of diabetes after confirmation of pregnancy
Pregnant woman may have overt hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules or thyroid malignancy during pregnancy. Polycystic ovarian syndrome Sheehan syndrome refers to hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism usually with onset during delivery and associated with post-partum hemorrhage, lactational failure and secondary amenorroea. Premature Menopause refers to onset of menopause before 40 years of age.
