Low Testosterone and Diabetes: Hypogonadism in Diabetes

Low testosterone is a common condition that often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to other conditions.
If you have type 2 diabetes, you are twice as likely to suffer from low testosterone as a man without diabetes. Older age and obesity may be factors, as both are associated with type 2 diabetes and both decrease testosterone levels.  The Endocrine Society has made recommendation to measure testosterone levels in all male patients with type 2 diabetes.

Low testosterone is associated with

  • obesity
  • very high C-reactive protein concentrations
  • mild anemia
  • decreased BMD

The symptoms of low testosterone can include:

  • diminished interest in sex
  • erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • reduced lean body mass
  • depressed mood
  • lack of energy.

If you are experiencing diminished interest in sex, ED or multiple symptoms together such as lack of desire to have sex and lack of energy you should talk to your endocrinologist.

Your endocrinologist can check your testosterone levels with a simple blood test. If you do have low testosterone it can be easily treated by your endocrinologist. There are several treatment options available for the treatment of hypogonadism in chennai such as gels, patches or injections that increase the amount of testosterone in your body.

Men receiving testosterone therapy have shown an increase in insulin sensitivity, as well as a decrease in waist circumference. They have also shown an increase in libido but not an improvement in erectile dysfunction; phosphodiesterase inhibitors may be needed.

The commonly used treatment is the injection available as testoviron and sustanon 250mg and 100mg. The depot preparation cernos is available as 1000mg and is can be used once in 4 months. Endocrinologist may also use gels like cernos gel or androgel which are applied over the body daily.

If you have any of the problems related to low testosterone and diabetes, visit your endocrinologist  who specializes in treating conditions like low testosterone.
